چکیده

In this report, we introduce a model based on geometrical optics which describes the propagation of light in homogeneous uniaxially anisotropic media. We call this model the OpIn model. A ray-tracing algorithm based on the OpIn model is also introduced. Results from a test case obtained by the OpIn model are compared with results from the commercial ray-tracing program ASAP. It appears that results obtained by ASAP show a number of defects, while the OpIn model produces plausible and solid results. This gives confidence in the use of the OpIn model and the corresponding ray-tracing algorithm.

Ray-Optics Analysis of Inhomogeneous Uniaxially Anisotropic Media

Uniaxial optical anisotropy in the geometrical-optics approach is a classical problem and most of the theory is known for at least fifty years. Although the subject appears frequently in the literature, it is nearly silent about wave propagation through inhomogeneous anisotropic media. At the same time, the rapid advances in liquid-crystal lenses call for a good overview of the theory on wave p...

Amphoteric refraction at the interface between isotropic and anisotropic media

Hailu Luo, Wei Hu, Xunong Yi, Haiying Liu, and Jing Zhu Laboratory of Light Transmission Optics, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510630, China (Dated: June 8, 2006) Abstract It is found that the amphoteric refraction, i.e. the refraction can be either positive or negative depending on the incident angles, could occur at a planar interface associated with a uniaxially anisotropic positi...

Velocity Modeling in a Vertical Transversely Isotropic Medium Using Zelt Method

In the present paper, the Zelt algorithm has been extended for ray tracing through an anisotropic model. In anisotropic media, the direction of the propagated energy generally differs from that of the plane-wave propagation. This makes velocity values to be varied in different directions. Therefore, velocity modeling in such media is completely different from that in an isotropic media. The vel...

Saint-Venant torsion of non-homogeneous anisotropic bars

The BEM is applied to the solution of the torsion problem of non-homogeneous anisotropic non-circular prismatic bars. The problem is formulated in terms of the warping function. This formulation leads to a second order partial differential equation with variable coefficients, subjected to a generalized Neumann type boundary condition. The problem is solved using the Analog Equation Method (AEM)...

Ray-optics analysis of inhomogeneous biaxially anisotropic media.

Firm evidence of the biaxial nematic phase in liquid crystals, not induced by a magnetic or electric field, has been established only recently. The discovery of these biaxially anisotropic liquid crystals has opened up new areas of both fundamental and applied research. The advances in biaxial liquid-crystal-related topics call for a good overview on the propagation of waves through biaxially a...
